Our laboratory works on two different projects. In one project (Thiel) we design and construct artificially gated ion channel proteins for functional reconstitution in lipid bilayers and polymers. In a second project (Meckel), changes of plasma membrane dynamics in response to modifiable synthetic extracellular matrices are investigated. The cells’ response to such changing supports is monitored by recording the distribution and mobility of membrane proteins, which are relevant to cell-matrix adhesion, with single molecule precision. Parts of the project will be carried out in close collaboration with projects B1.
